Wheels and Wellies Walk

Date: Sunday 25 February 2018
Location:
Saltwell Park, Gateshead, Newcastle NE9 5AX

Spin your wheels and pull on your wellies for Contact!

Wrap up warm, pack your umbrella and get ready to splash around Gateshead's Saltwell Park on Sunday 25th February for Contact, the charity for families with disabled children.

Our first Wheels & Wellies Walk will take you, your friends and family on a 1km or 3km wheelchair and pushchair accessible loop around Gateshead's Saltwell Park. Along the way there'll be puzzles for everyone taking part  and refreshments available to purchase from Saltwell Towers Cafe.

Want to go the extra mile to support Contact?

  • Why don't you set up an online fundraising page and ask people to sponsor you for completing the route? There is no minimum sponsorship target required, so you can raise as little or as much as you want, and every penny raised will help us to reach more families sooner. There will be a special prize for the participant who raises the most sponsorship overall! If you have any queries please get in touch with our fundraising team on fundraising@contact.org.uk or telephone 0207 6088767.
  • Jazz up your wellies, wheelchair or pushchair for the Wheels & Wellies Walk and enter our best decorated Wheel and Wellie competition! The competition will take place at 10.45, just before the start of the walk and there will be a prize for the winners!

Parking

There is parking available in the public car park at Saltwell Park. The car park will also be open to the general public who are visiting the park, so please allow plenty of time to park when you arrive as we cannot reserve spaces.

  • The park can be accessed by pedestrians from East Park Road, West Park Road, Saltwell Road South, Saltwell View and Joicey Road.
  • The car and coach park is accessed from Durham Road (A167) via Joicey Road.
  • Use the journey planner at GoNorthEast who operate the 53 and 54 bus to Saltwell Park.

Where does the walk start?

The walk will start and finish at Saltwell Towers in the middle of the park. Registration will be in the entrance area of the Towers, and the café open for refreshments.

What do I get with my entry?

Participants will all receive a walker number and an information sheet that they can complete on the way round the walk. The walk will be guided with marshals directing you around the route. There will be questions to answer and stickers to collect on the way round. On completion of the walk, each participant will receive a goodie bag and a certificate.

Photographs on the day

We will have an official photographer taking photos on the day, so if you would rather not have your photo taken, please let the volunteers know when you sign in. There will be permission forms for each participant to sign to confirm they are happy to have their photos taken.

Are refreshments available?

Refreshments will be available to purchase in the café at Saltwell Towers. With a selection of delicious drinks and snacks, including sandwiches, homemade cakes, pastries and biscuits, there will be something for everyone.

Don't forget to decorate your Wheels and your Wellies!

We will be holding a best decorated Wheel and Wellie competition on the day, so come prepared with your decorated Wheels or Wellies, ready for the judging at 10.45! Winners will receive a prize and the honoured title of best decorated wheel or wellie.

Is the route accessible?

Saltwell Park features accessible pathways looping around the park, which the walk will follow. The route will be accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs, but please take into account the weather conditions on the day. Some of the pathways may be slippery if it is wet weather, so sensible shoes (or even better, wellies!) may be necessary.

Please note that the park is still open to the public, so there may be others using the pathways whilst the walk is taking place.

Disabled facilities

All areas of the park are accessible to disabled visitors including ramp/level access, parking areas for disabled visitors and disabled toilet facilities.  There are two disabled toilets in Saltwell Towers but the disabled toilet facilities changing bed is currently out of order.

Medical needs

St John's Ambulance will be on site in case of any emergencies, but please remember to bring any medication needed for you or anyone you are responsible for on the day.

Responsibility for children

Please note that whilst this event is being organised by Contact, children remain the responsibility of the accompanying adults throughout the event. If you decide to not complete the walk, or walk away from the guided route, it is at your own risk.
