BBC publishes Education Health and Care plan waiting times

Wednesday 9th January 2019

The BBC has published results from Freedom of Information requests on waiting times for Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans in England.

Once a plan is requested, the law says councils must issue the EHC plan within a maximum of 20 weeks of the initial request. But the BBC has learned around four in 10 plans have taken longer.

We frequently hear from parents on our helpline that EHC plans have not been issued within the statutory 20 weeks, with a hold up often coming at the draft plan stage when council's have to consult the parent's preferred school.

We often hear from parents whose local councils have consulted a range of schools all of which have apparently said "no" - and the process has been going on for many months with no school identified. In the worst cases a child is out of education while this is happening, with no provision in place.
