Meet our London Marathon runner David

The London Marathon is only a few weeks away and Contact has 11 amazing runners who have been training and fundraising with all their might to represent us at this year's event.

On 22nd April they will be making a huge difference to help Contact continue providing advice, information and support to thousands of families with disabled children in the UK.

Today, we'd like to introduce you to our sports enthusiast runner David Williams, who joined our marathon team after hearing about our work from his girlfriend's mum Miranda.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Contact -picMy name's Dave Williams! I'm originally from the South Wales valleys but moved to London in January 2014 to start work as an assistant producer at talkSPORT radio station.

I'm still at talkSPORT but have moved into a social media producer role, which basically means spending all the time on Twitter and Facebook, while I also produce the Warm Up every Sunday.

Why did you decide to support Contact by taking part in the London Marathon?

I first heard about Contact earlier this year as my girlfriend's mother worked with the charity and told me they were looking for people to be part of their marathon team.

Since signing up to support Contact I have looked into what they do and have been blown away and truly moved by the hard work undertaken by those involved and it has made me all the more driven to raise as much money as possible and get through the 26-mile run!

What has been the biggest challenge in your marathon journey so far?

I have taken on a number of half-marathons over the last four years but this will be my first full marathon and it has really challenged me. The hardest part of the journey so far is finding the energy and inspiration to hit the London streets on cold, wet winter nights after getting up at 5am for work!

My knees are also feeling the strain, which has led me to buy all sorts of rollers and knee straps, bandages and supplements to ensure no long term damage! As well as this, I also decided to try out veganism in January which meant a big change in my diet but I've found eating nothing but nuts, hummus and broccoli hasn't affected my running abilities!

What are you most/least excited about?

While the marathon is very daunting, I'm really looking forward to doing it and running amongst such a big, enthusiastic crowd. I have done the Cardiff half marathon three times now and the atmosphere is always incredible so I'm imagining the London crowds will give me even more of a lift!

Any hobbies outside running?

When I'm not running around London I like to watch football and I'm a big Leeds United fan so I try to get to Elland Road as much as possible. Before training I also loved going to the gym and weightlifting with my workmates and I'm looking forward to getting back to that when the marathon is over!
