Shama takes on marathon challenge for 50th birthday year

Shama and her running group

Shama tells us why her 50th birthday year led to her taking up an unexpected opportunity...

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser by profession.  Having a full time desk job, running gives me the opportunity to do some exercise and be out in the fresh air.

Why did you decide to support Contact by taking part in the London Marathon?

I wanted to do something special for my 50th birthday year and when my friend Angela mentioned there was a charity place available for Contact but she was unable to take part this year, I thought this was an opportunity I could not miss.

I was a bit apprehensive to start with but now I am so pleased I took the chance.

What has been the biggest challenge in your London marathon journey so far?

Fitting in the training with a full time job and other family commitments.

What are you most/least excited about?

I am most excited about running with 40,000 other runners and going past all the cheering crowds. I took part in the Great North Run in 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience - I am hoping the London Marathon will be the same if not better.

I am aware that I have not done enough training and am worried that by the time I get to the finish line no one will be around.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside running?

I dabble a little at badminton and play that once a week.  I am a keen advocate of park runs and am a Run Director at my local park run  - Canons Park as well as a joint Run Director with my 15 year old daughter at Kenton Rec Junior park run. I also lead a small running group for ladies every Sunday.
