We want to tell you about our By Your Side project.

Many of you will sadly know that having a child in hospital can be a time of unimaginable stress.

Our By Your Side parent advisers are based in three hospitals in the UK, supporting parents when they most need it with vital emotional and practical support.

We asked our By Your Side parent adviser Ruth to tell us a typical story of the work she does in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

I'm Ruth, By Your Side parent adviser at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH)

"Recently I met a little boy called Archie and his family. Archie is five years and has an auto immune disorder, and he was an inpatient at Great Ormond Street Hospital when his mum Holly came to speak to our regular drop-in stand at GOSH.

"Holly was staying with Archie in his room, and the family were finding things really stressful. Holly normally worked full time, but was using her annual leave to cover Archie's emergency hospitalisation. Her employers told her she had to. But Holly was running out of holiday, and Archie was not ready to go home.

"On top of this, dad James also had to take time off from work to travel 1.5 hours daily to visit them. Unsurprisingly, Archie's family were left feeling very unsupported.

"I made sure Holly and James knew about their rights in work. This allowed Holly to take additional time off without worrying out her annual leave finishing. I also completed an urgent grant request for their family, which successfully helped them pay for their increased living costs.

"And I put Holly and James in touch with our expert education advisers, who talked the family through some other issues they were having about Archie's education."

Without Ruth, Archie's family may well have not got the support they needed

Our By Your Side parent advisers help families with their most pressing issues.

They help families find out what benefits they might be entitled to - such as Disability Living Allowance payments when in hospital - and get the right support at school.

They guide families through condition-specific services, help them find local support groups, and signpost to local organisations.

You can support projects like By Your Side by taking part in Dinosaur Day 2019

We can't continue projects like By Your Side without fundraising.

We are gearing up for our biggest fundraising event of the year. Dinosaur Day 2019 will be held on Wednesday 19th June and we are calling on supporters to get involved. Dinosaur Day was inspired by a boy called Cameron Mathieson, who himself spent much of his life in hospital.

Getting involved is simple: organise a dino-tastic cake sale with a prehistoric theme and donate the funds raised. Channel your inner Mary Berry or Liam Charles for the day all for a good cause. We have a fun and inspiring fundraising pack to ensure your cake sale is a roaring success.
