Carers in Scotland to receive one-off Covid-19 supplement payment
Thursday 21st May 2020
Unpaid carers in Scotland who receive Carer's Allowance will receive an extra payment of £230.10 alongside the June Carer's Allowance Supplement payment.
The one-off payment is in recognition of additional pressures that unpaid carers are facing during the ongoing pandemic. The payment is included in the Coronavirus (Scotland) Bill 2, which was passed by the Scottish Parliament yesterday, Wednesday 20 May, and is expected to receive Royal Assent around 28 May.
The extra payment will mean that on top of their Carer's Allowance and any other income, eligible unpaid carers will receive an additional £690.30 this year.
This supplement is not paid in the rest of the UK.
Contact calls for supplement to be made UK-wide
Contact thinks all unpaid carers across the UK should receive a carer's Covid-19 payment in recognition of the extra care they are providing in lockdown.
Many carers will be facing extra costs during this pandemic, with higher food costs, home -schooling costs and an increase in household bills all factors.
We are calling on the Chancellor to commit to offering a coronavirus supplement payment to all unpaid carers throughout the UK.
