Government review of school exclusions

Monday 6th May 2019

We are eagerly anticipating the publication of the government's review into school exclusions conducted by former Children's Minister Edward Timpson.

We hope any recommendations made will include reducing the numbers of children with SEND being excluded and ending the practice known as 'off-rolling'.

Amanda Batten, Chief Executive at Contact, said: "Children with special educational needs  up and down the country are missing out on their fundamental right to receive an education as they are more likely to be excluded compared to other children.

"We know from calls to our helpline and our own research that children with additional needs are routinely illegally excluded from school - put on part-time timetables, asked not to attend school trips or stay away during school inspections.

"We are also concerned about the illegal practice of off-rolling, removing children with SEND from the school register out of concern for the school's overall academic results."

We will keep you updated with the review's findings when it is published.
