More Universal Credit roll outs this Autumn
Friday 18th November 2016
This Autumn the full Universal Credit 'digital service' is being extended to those areas with a postcode starting with:
- From October 2016 - Skipton, Northallerton, Kennington Park, Peckham, Taunton, Minehead.
- From November 2016 - Workington, Whitehaven, Daventry, Market Harborough, Port Glasgow, Greenock, Kirkintilloch, Melton Mowbray.
- From December 2016 - Hartlepool, Hastings, Fulham, Shepherds Bush, Stratford-upon-Avon, Swindon.
Anyone of working age - including a parent with a disabled child - who lives in these areas and who makes a new claim for one of the means-tested benefits that Universal Credit is replacing will be asked to claim Universal Credit instead.
For example, if a parent in one of these areas loses their job and tries to claim income support, they will need to claim Universal Credit instead. This Universal Credit claim will then also replace any housing benefit or tax credits they already receive.
Families in these areas who do not try to make a new claim for one of the benefits that Universal Credit is replacing won't be moved onto Universal Credit until some point between 2019 and 2022.
A new postcode checker has been introduced that tells you who
can claim Universal Credit in your area. It also provides
information about local advice services where you live. This is a
free service developed by two charities LASA and LITRG. Simply
enter your postcode at www.universalcreditinfo.net
