This month our parent adviser Lesley Black has been speaking to TheSchoolRun.com about what the law says about absence from school and how schools should support absent children.

Lesley works in the special educational needs team of our freephone helpline, supporting parents on topics ranging from extra support in school, Education, Health and Care plans and school transport.

Health problems and school absence

In the first part of her interview, Lesley explains what the law says about school absence as a result of health reasons.

She also talks about the support available if your child is absent from school. This includes online learning, pupil referral units and home tutoring.

Fitting in at school after a long absence

In the second part of her interview, Lesley talks about what schools should do to help children settle back into school life after a lengthy absence.

Schools are likely to be more concerned with a child's wellbeing than in achieving straight away, and ideally schools should find ways to allow absent children to keep in touch with their classmates.
