Over 170 parent carers gather to celebrate the impact of Parent Participation

Wednesday 6th November 2019

Today sees the start of the Parent Carer Participation conference organised by Contact and the National Network for Parent Carer Forums. Over 170 parents from more than 90 Parent Carer Forums from across England are meeting at the two-day conference being held at the Crowne Plaza in Chester.

It will be an action packed event celebrating how parent carers work together with services, and there will be lots of opportunities to share ideas through workshops and networking.

Gail Walshe, Director of Parent Carer Participation at Contact, said: "We are delighted to host the 2019 Annual National Conference of Parent Carer Forums. Over the two days we will celebrate all the parent carers whose opinions and views have helped to make improvements to services across local areas in England.

"We know that running a forum can be incredibly demanding, especially as parent carer volunteers also have caring responsibilities. Contact is proud to support Parent Carer Forums and the National Network of Parent Carer Forums and we are committed to listening to what they need to make them strong and sustainable for whatever the future brings."

Contact's support for forums

Contact offers a wide range of resources and support to Parent Carer Forums. Each of the 151 forums has a dedicated member of Contact staff - a parent carer participation advisor - who can be contacted for phone and email support about running an effective forum. Contact's website is full of useful resources for forums at each stage of development and Contact organises a series of Webinars on key issues affecting forums.

Carolyn Deveney, Head of Parent Carer Participation at Contact, said: "Parent carers and children and young people are experts in determining what they need, because they have lived experience of the impact of successful and poor provision. It's these experiences that help to shape improvements and make positive changes."
