Sign our petition on a Carers Covid Payment

Friday 22nd May 2020

Today, we launch our campaign calling on the Chancellor to offer a coronavirus payment to all unpaid carers wherever they live in the UK.

Unpaid carers in Scotland who get Carer's Allowance will receive a payment due to the extra pressure they're facing as a result of the pandemic.

Following this announcement yesterday, and responding to parent carers on our Facebook page who rightly pointed out that unpaid carers are facing similar pressures and extra costs wherever they live in the UK, we have launched this petition.

Una Summerson, Head of Campaigns at Contact, said:

"All unpaid carers wherever they live in the UK should receive a coronavirus payment. This would help with some of the extra costs many are facing due to the pandemic, but would also importantly send a message from government to all unpaid carers that they are valued at this difficult time.

"This is the kind of recognition that families with disabled children need at this time. Please join our campaign by signing our petition."

Carer's Allowance legal challenge

We are also highlighting a legal challenge, calling for Carer's Allowance to be increased for the duration of the pandemic.

There is a case being brought by Bindmans solicitors. A mum who has a daughter with complex needs has crowdfunded the money needed to start the case, but has had to pull out. They are really keen for another family to take on the case, as they have got so far.
