What are your top three extra costs?

Tuesday 5th June 2018

More than 2,000 parent carers have already completed our Counting the Cost survey.  A big thank you for taking the time to fill in the survey.

If you haven't filled in the survey you have until 18 June. It only takes 10 minutes.

What's this research about?

This research provides us with the evidence to campaign for better financial support for families with disabled children to help cover their extra costs.

Last time we did our Counting the Costs research we found the top three extra costs were:

  1. Higher heating and utility bills
  2. Additional transport and childcare costs
  3. More frequent washing and replacing household goods, clothes, toys.

Tell us about your extra costs by filling in the survey.

Our last survey uncovered vital DLA findings

Evidence from our last Counting the Costs survey also found the main reasons why families are not making a claim for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) (the main benefit to help with the extra costs of caring for a disabled child) are often linked to misconceptions about DLA eligibility.

Key findings were:

  • 44 per cent think their child's disability isn't severe enough to claim DLA.
  • 24 per cent think they need a diagnosis for their child to claim DLA.
  • 18 per cent feel uneasy claiming benefits for their disabled child.

Here a parent tells us how our DLA webpage helped her claim DLA for her son.

"My son has complex needs which affect his development, motor skills and behaviour. However, it never entered my head that he may be able to claim a benefit

"After consulting your website, I made a claim which has now been granted. This will make big difference to us as a family.

"I only wonder that all the myriad social workers, doctors and other professionals we have seen over four years never mentioned it."

We run surveys such as this one so we can find out the main issues affecting families, and this helps us learn what we can do to support them. The misconceptions around DLA eligibility are just one example of this.
