Contact a Family patron and ex deputy CEO awarded OBE
Monday 19th June 2017
Contact a Family patron and former deputy chief executive, Paul Soames, has been given an OBE for services to children and families.
Paul's award was announced in the Queen's birthday honours list published on 17 June and celebrates over 30 years' dedicated service to Contact a Family and our work supporting UK families with disabled children.
Commenting on Paul's OBE, Contact a Family's CEO, Amanda Batten said:
"We are delighted at the news of Paul's hugely deserved honour. Paul is incredibly passionate about Contact a Family - so much so that when he retired earlier this year we were lucky enough to keep him as a patron.
"Throughout his 30 plus years at Contact a Family Paul has helped us make a real difference to families with disabled children - helping them overcome the barriers they face, raising awareness of the issues that affect them and helping parent carers across the UK get their voices heard through the parent participation work he helped pioneer.
"Paul demonstrates huge commitment in all he does. His genuine passion for his work and determination to go the extra mile to make a difference inspires the same commitment in others. Contact a Family trustees and staff are all extremely proud of Paul and it's fantastic that his hard work and dedication has been recognised in this way."
Paul started working at Contact a Family in 1984. In his 33 years at the charity he:
- Helped us reach some of the most isolated parents across the UK and opened offices in Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff enabling to reach even more families.
- Grew our helpline from its inception to a service that now responds to 12,000 enquiries a year.
- Oversaw the growth of parent carer participation programme into an England-wide network of over 70,000 parents of disabled children, with a forum active today in every local authority giving parent carers a voice in shaping services.
