Funding boost for Northern Ireland families around moving into adulthood
Wednesday 15th February 2017
Contact a Family Northern Ireland and Carers NI are delighted to have received funding to identify the best ways to support families with disabled children moving into adulthood.
The Big Lottery are funding the project to scope out what help families with disabled children need when they are going through transition, which can be a particularly difficult time.
Lyndsay Wallace, Contact a Family Northern Ireland, Manager, said: "Moving into adulthood is a challenging time for all young people and their parents. But for families with disabled young people those challenges and worries are amplified. Many parents have real fears for the future. They may have battled for years to get support for their child and worry that will disappear. It's so important that they get the right support so that it is not a time of crisis and stress"
Contact a Family and Carers NI are holding a series of Transition Consultation Workshops to understand families' experiences - what the issues are and where there are gaps in information and support. The charities are also asking families and professionals with experience of transition to complete a survey, which will help them develop a project to families in Northern Ireland through this process.
Clare-Anne Magee from Carers NI, said: "We're delighted to be working with Contact a Family and welcome the Big Lottery funding to enable us to carry out this vital work. Parent carers often tell us how much they struggle with the transition from child to adult services to get the support they need and how unprepared they are for the change. We hope that by carrying out this scoping exercise we can devise a project that will help support and guide parent carers across Northern Ireland through the transition process."
If you are a parent carer going through transition and you would like to attend a workshop, please contact Lindsay Wallace at email@example.com or telephone 028 92 627552 for more information or to book your place.
