Developing parent carer forums

Parent carer forums are one of the most effective routes to engaging successfully with families of disabled children. Each forum is made up of parent carers with a broad range of experience of the health, education, and social care systems. They are increasingly recognised as both key strategic partners of local government and a vital voice at national level.

There are now over 82,000 parent carers connected to a forum in England (up 23 per cent in the past four years). We provide these forums with over 5,000 hours of one-to-one support each year and fulfils a strategic support role to the representative body, the National Network of Parent Carer Forums (NNPCF).

Using this experience, we have provided consultancy support to the governments in Scotland and Jersey to help them establish their own forums and co-production structures and programmes.

What we offer

This two-day training course introduces the concept of a parent carer forum, highlights the value they bring through co-production and discusses how to establish and develop a forum. Additional consultancy services can be included for more tailored insight, and where possible we will deliver these sessions in co-production with parent carers.

Who is this course for?

This course is specifically designed for local authorities and devolved governments in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands interested in setting up or further developing an existing parent carer forum (or local equivalent).

Please note that this course is not provided in England, as we offer a separate programme of support funded by the Department for Education. If you would like to know more about this work, please contact us.

Parents interested in setting up a group themselves may be interested in our Effective networking for parent-led groups course.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand the concept and value of parent carer forums, including best practice for their establishment and ongoing support.
  • Know how to design services in co-production with parent carer forums.

Additional consultancy services

Our two-day training course is designed as an introduction to these structures and concepts for your organisation and partners. Beyond this, you may benefit from some further direct assistance in developing your plans, including:

  • On site consultancy support to explore your particular circumstances.
  • Ongoing access to the expertise of our specialist parent carer participation team.
  • Additional learning and networking opportunities within the national parent carer participation agenda, including conference and webinars.

Depending on your specific objectives, it may be possible for us to deliver these services in collaboration with national representatives of the National Network of Parent Carer Forums.
