Taking your child to the hospital for an appointment or overnight stay isn’t just an emotionally difficult experience: it can also bring about a series of practical challenges for families.

Many can be left feeling confused by the maze of medical departments and their complicated jargon, unsure of where to turn for help. Others are faced with unexpected extra costs — whether due to taking transport to and from hospital, eating fewer meals at home, or having to cut back on work hours.

If you’re in this situation and could do with some help, come join a special Q&A session in Contact’s private Facebook group on Monday, 15 November between 10.30am and 12pm.

Our By Your Side hospital advisers will be on hand to answer any of your questions or concerns in writing. Here is just some of what they can help with:

  • Benefit entitlements while in hospital
  • Where to stay during their visit
  • Available grants and other ways to save money
  • Easing your child’s anxiety
  • Managing education and schooling
  • Preparing for appointments
  • Top tips for inpatient visits
  • Coping emotionally
  • Supporting siblings

To take part, you’ll have to be a member of our Facebook group for parent carers. Just request to join, answer the three membership questions and you’re in.

Then, look out for a special Q&A post at 10.30am on 15 November where you can ask any questions directly to our team!

Can’t make 15 November?

Once our Q&A session is finished, you’ll be able to read through all the questions and answers at a time that suits you.

If none of the answers are relevant to you, don’t worry: you can get in touch with our By Your Side team directly by contacting your local hospital adviser.

You can also find out more information in our hospital factsheet and in our latest podcast episode covering top tips for hospital stays.
