There was a welcome boost for families of disabled young people yesterday as the Prime Minister addressed the issue of locked Child Trust Funds during Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).
Responding to a question from Sarah Smith MP, the PM acknowledged the unnecessary hurdles parent carers are facing. He confirmed that ministers are reviewing the system and aim to set out a response within weeks. We would like to thank Sarah Smith for her ongoing support on this issue in parliament.
A complex process that needs to change
When a young person lacking mental capacity turns 18, their families are often forced through a complex, lengthy, and expensive process to access savings that rightfully belong to their child.
At Contact, we are pleased to support the campaign for a less complex process. Parent Andrew Turner has led this campaign, and his hard work has been central to raising awareness of this issue.
PM signals support for change
In his response, PM Andy Burnham expressed clear support for finding a practical solution. He reaffirmed the commitment to work alongside cross-party MPs, financial providers, and charities to ensure disabled young people can access their money without unnecessary legal barriers.
This parliamentary progress builds on ongoing action behind the scenes. Just two weeks ago, Maria Scholey, Engagement Lead at Contact and parent campaigner Andrew Turner joined forces in a productive meeting with Justice Minister Jake Richards. At this meeting they discuss practical solutions and pressed for reform.
Seeing the Prime Minister address this topic directly will give families real hope that a lasting fix is within reach.
